Let’s find a project that resonates with you.

Alright nurses. Let’s dive into your new go-to guide for picking out the perfect evidence-based project whether your goal is to climb the clinical ladder, earn a bonus, or shine in your master's program, finding the right project can really set you apart.

Not to mention, this is a great way to demonstrate your leadership skills by improving something on the unit that can really make a difference—both for the nurses, but most importantly, our patients.

I've been in your shoes—struggling to pick a topic that will keep me engaged and willing to see it through—so I know how important it is to choose a project that not only fits your professional goals but also sparks something you’re actually passionate about.

This FREE guide is packed with over 200 project ideas across different nursing specialties to help you find something that resonates with you!

Let’s get started.

How do you want to make a difference?

Take your time exploring these ideas. The best project is one that feels right for you and has the potential to make a real difference.

  • Think about what you’re passionate about in nursing. Do not pick a topic that will make you procrastinate and absolutely dread carrying out this project. Think about the issues on the unit you wish leadership would change right now (lack of needed supplies, educating nurses on a certain skill/concept better, safety issues, charting requirements, burnout, collaborating with other departments, etc.).

No topic is off-limits to explore, and chances are, there is evidence-based research to suggest solutions to these issues.

  • Try to align your project with your career aspirations. If you’re aiming for a leadership role one day, maybe look into topics related to management or policy. For clinical advancement, focus on improving bedside care practices. For aspirations in becoming an educator, find topics worth educating your colleagues with in-services and demonstrations.

  • Identify issues or gaps in your current practice or workplace. What problems do you see that need solving? Is there a concept or new unit policy you wish you would have had more education on during orientation? Is there a high incident of falls, CAUTIs, or CLABSIs on your unit that warrant educational refreshing? Is there a vulnerable patient population (domestic abuse, homelessness, drug or alcohol abuse, dementia, etc.) your unit serves that requires specialized education?

  • Play to your strengths and skills! If you’re great at data analysis, perhaps a project involving quality improvement metrics would suit you. If you’re a natural educator, consider a project that involves patient or staff education. If you are great with technology, consider improving electronic medical record (EMR) process improvements or education.

  • Don’t hesitate to ask for advice from mentors, colleagues, or educators. They might offer insights or suggest areas that you hadn’t considered.

Discuss the topics or issues you are interested in and they will likely be able to help you focus in on something that would be highly beneficial to the unit or nursing practice in general!

  • Ensure your project is realistic given your time, resources, and support. A well-executed small project is better than an ambitious one that you can’t complete.

How do you want to present your project?
